characters and plot points:
Thomas throughout the scorch trials is almost always kind, gentle, moral, and is often known to lose hope easily and gains unhappiness most of the time. The story starts off from where the Maze Runner left off and the main character is Thomas, Thomas had just escaped the maze along with other gladers and they are all rescued from it as well and now are being taken to the Scorch (1). Where they also receive a task given to them which is to get to the safe haven so that they could get the cure for the Flare disease which they all have (1). Also while his time in the maze he found out he could communicate telepathically but only with Teresa. Which he uses this ability to try and find out where Teresa exactly is at in that moment so he can go and find her but he receives no response (4). Later on in the story Teresa and Thomas meet each other only to find out that Teresa has betrayed Thomas and all the gladers and all together ends up having received a task from wicked to kill him because Thomas is all the source of reason for his group and group B (65). Things are not looking good for the future of the group and the future of Teresa and Thomas's relationship.

Theme:
There are many themes in the scorch trials but I believe that friendship is the main theme because while reading the book it came to mind that we really can't function without our friends, it's that close bond that you have with your friends that allows you to truly fight through anything as long as you stick together and that's what the gladers and Thomas have. You can see this very clearly throughout the book with people like Thomas and Minho because as the situations get even more serious the power of friendship really starts to show through Thomas and Minho and even the gladers (61). If you take the first book for instance you can see that as Thomas was being brought into the maze he was very shy and timid and also very distant didn't really talk much he also had no friends. As the book progresses you can clearly see that Thomas can't bear to be separated from the group (gladers) and it's that bond that grows stronger than anything else could overcome.
